Located inside the Grove Hotel on Capitol Blvd, Trillium is one of the best places to eat in Boise. Specialized in New American food, the restaurant relies mostly on local ingredients, a guarantee of freshness. We recommend you try the smoked trout poutine, bison meatloaf, or huckleberry short ribs. Bonus: Take advantage of the evening happy hour when you can get good discounts on Idaho beers, wine, and appetizers.
You will find Tasso on 8th Street, the city’s unofficial restaurants’ row. Tasso is very popular among locals and tourists for its fancy sandwiches featuring house-cured meats, sliced thin and layered on locally baked fresh bread. Add to that the original sauces and some crunchy slaws and you’ll understand why Tasso sandwiches are so famous. Our favorites are the Country Devil, a yummy combination of tasso ham, roasted pork, and melted cheese, and the turkey sandwich with pickled fennel and carrots. There are, of course, plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available. Did we mention the free popcorn?
Everybody loves pizza, right? Well, the Wylder at 501 W Broad St is the best pizza place in Boise. The secret behind its mouth-watering pizza is probably the 52-year-old sourdough starter they use. Try the Honeybadger, which is a white pizza with Italian sausage, ricotta, caramelized onions, and spicy honey! It’s not just about pizza, as they make a mean lasagna based on a family-secret recipe. Then there are also the freshly baked pies to consider, which have just one defect – it’s so hard to decide which to choose.
As the name says, Petite is a small husband-and-wife place that aims to recreate the ambiance and flavors of a French bistro. The menu changes with the season and they frequently rotate their specials. One night they might offer you the oysters special, and the next one it might be delicious tartines. Oh, and don’t miss the vermouth or sherry cocktails.
Le Coq d’Or French Restaurant
Since we’re on the French cuisine subject, you could treat yourself with an exquisite dinner at Le Coq d’Or located in the Chateau des Fleurs, a gorgeous place to wander around to work up an appetite. Due to its stupendous location, the castle is one of Boise’s most sought-after wedding venues. And the food, oh, lets’ not forget about the food. At the Coq d’Or you can taste all sorts of European dishes, not just French – like Osso bucco, beet gnocchi, duck with porcini, or brie en croute, plus many many more.
Diablo and Sons
Also located on restaurants’ row on 8th St, Diablo and Sons is a whole new experience mixing modern slick vibes with Old West motifs. Their strongest feature are the taco platters, which you can try with some pickled veggies. Or you can feast on tamales and a la carte tacos. They’re to die for!
Big City Coffee and Cafe
This is one of the best breakfast and lunch places in town. If you need to charge your batteries for the day, this is the perfect place as their motto is“where bigger is better”. And when they say bigger, they mean it – platters piled high with biscuits and gravy and a tamale breakfast like you’ve never seen before. Just make sure to leave some place for the glorious deserts. Hint – ask for the giant cherry pie scone.
Another great little place on the famous 8th St, Bittercreek Alehouse is a beer-lover’s paradise. They frequently host beer-related events, during which you can sample sour or barrel-aged beers, drinks you won’t ever find at the local supermarket. Since you cannot drink on an empty stomach, the alehouse has a list of local delicacies to go with that beer, such as several variations of poutine, smoked Idaho Trout, or the fabulous house-ground burger. Big bonus, they have special retro tin lunchboxes filled with activities to keep your little ones busy while you sample those beers.
American cuisine at its finest with a hint of global flavors, that is how The Dish managed to become one of the most popular restaurants in Boise. The menu is based on local produce, but the recipes are out of this world. How does grilled salmon with a red curry-coconut sauce served with jasmine rice sound to you? Or how about soy roasted peanuts or quinoa burger topped with lemon-tarragon yogurt, sprouts, tomatoes, and cucumber on a focaccia bun. If you can manage it after that big burger, you should absolutely try their deserts. Nutella panna cotta, anyone?
This is one of the city’s award-winning upscale restaurants, conveniently located in downtown Boise inside Hotel 43. Chandlers is for seafood connoisseurs, with most ingredients flown in from Hawaii or Alaska. You will have a hard time choosing between steamed mussels in a white wine or the French classic seafood stew, bouillabaisse. However, if you’re not into seafood, you can dine on Kobe rib eye or any of the other prime steaks on the menu, which you can wash down with some fine wine. It will take you a while to decide exactly what wine as the list has over 650 choices. Or you can ask the chef for suggestions.
The list could go on and on – Epi’s Basque Restaurant featuring such delicacies as baby squid in a briny, jet-black broth, Richard’s with its grilled octopus and stuffed cannelloni, Fork with those incredible butterscotch cinnamon rolls or Madre Boutique Taqueria. So, are you hungry yet?
